The Chinese New Year Festival Offers Up Live Performances, Arts and Crafts, and More

Celebrating the Year of the Rat, the Crow Museum of Asian Art of The University of Texas at Dallas will present the 21st Annual Chinese New Year Festival on Saturday, February 1st.

The Rat is the first of all zodiac animals. According to the myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived at his party. The Rat tricked the Ox into giving him a ride. Then, just as they arrived at the finish line, Rat jumped down and landed ahead of Ox, becoming first. In terms of yin and yang, the Rat is yang and represents the beginning of a new day. In Chinese culture, rats were seen as a sign of wealth and surplus.

This marks the third year that the Chinese New Year Festival will be held indoors where it continues to thrive and attract record-breaking crowds. Fun for all ages, the signature event will feature stunning dragon and lion dances, musical and martial-arts demos, art-making and calligraphy, specialty booths, wellness activities, colorful entertainment and cultural performances, NorthPark retailer specials, and giveaways throughout the Center and more.

Hands-on activities will include decorating red envelopes, a Year of the Rat-inspired craft plus paper-cutting demonstrations, The Wishing Tree, and more at the Crow Museum of Asian Art. This venue inspires and promotes learning and dialogue about the arts and cultures of Asia through our exhibitions, the research and preservation of our collections, artistic and educational programming, and visitor experience and engagement.

The Chinese New Year Festival is free and open to the public. For additional information, please call (214) 979-6430.
